How often should gypsum bandages be replaced

2025 03/13

The frequency of changing plaster bandages needs to be determined based on specific circumstances and is not a fixed cycle. The initial plaster after surgery or fracture reduction, if made of ordinary plaster material, may release a small amount of heat during the solidification process and require observation of limb swelling changes. It is generally recommended to have the first follow-up within 1-2 weeks, and the doctor will evaluate whether to adjust the tightness or replace it.In daily use, if there is no damage, leakage, or odor in the plaster, and the blood flow and sensation at the end of the limbs are normal (such as flexible movement of fingers/toes and a rosy color), it can be rechecked every 4-6 weeks, and subsequent treatment can be determined based on the progress of fracture healing. But if there is looseness of the plaster (unable to be effectively fixed), local skin itching and ulceration (possibly caused by poor ventilation leading to eczema), obvious swelling and pain in the affected limb, or white and numb ends, immediate medical attention should be sought to replace it to avoid affecting healing or aggravating damage.
